CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
A man who was involved in a standoff with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police was found dead inside his south Charlotte home early Friday morning.
The standoff happened at 115 Hollyday Court in south Charlotte at 11:13 p.m. as police were responding to a disturbance call.
Police were told [David Martin] Sebaste, 48, was outside his house cursing and honking his car horn. The caller told police Sebaste was also armed with a handgun.
When officers arrived at the scene, Sebaste allegedly pointed his gun at the officers and fired multiple shots, according to CMPD spokesperson Robert Fey.
"Fearing for his life, the officer immediately fired several rounds from his service pistol," Fey said. "The officer was not injured during the exchange of fire."
Sebaste ran into his home creating a standoff situation, forcing police to call in the S.W.A.T. team.
After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with Sebaste, S.W.A.T. officers entered his home around 1:50 a.m. and found Sebaste dead.
The CMPD said Sebaste suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body. It is unclear if Sebaste was shot by the police officer or if he shot himself.
A neighbor told WBTV.com Sebaste had been harassing neighbors since early Thursday afternoon. The neighbor, who would only identify himself as "C.J." said Sebaste threatened to shoot him.
C.J. brushed off the threats initially until he said Sebaste became more aggressive.
"He pulled his car into the driveway, coming at the house, so I just called 911," C.J. said, "I was just scared for my family."
C.J. said he ducked for cover as the shots were being fired.
"I wasn't looking to see who shot first," he said.
The officer involved in the shooting, Patrick Howell, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation which is standard procedure. Howell was hired by CMPD in January of 2008.
